Marks’s Photos- #26
Today there are two photos from the archive. In August of 2008, our family went backpacking in the Weminuche Wilderness along the Continental Divide in Colorado. With elevations for much of the trip above 11,000 ft, it was literally breathtaking. My wife, Nancy, and our son and daughter hiked with me on a 5-day loop starting at the Rio Grande Reservoir at the headwaters of that river. Our son and daughter were both in college at the time. It was a rainy trip, but that did not stop us, and we enjoyed top-of-the-world views of the South San Juan Mountains along the way.
Along with grand views, the trip offered more intimate moments like the photo below. Taken as we were leaving camp at 12,000 ft. We had to skirt a small lake on our way to the ridge 700 feet above us, and our reflection came right along with us.
The blue backpacks beneath the deep blue sky. Sweet juxtaposition. Are you son and daughter backpackers to this day? I’m sure pesky jobs get in the way much of the time, yes? Camping and hiking with our three kids when they were young set them up for being adult nature folk.
Carrie and Will continue to like outside activities. Will is a cyclist and day hiker. Carrie, her husband and their three young boys are into car camping, sports, and Scouting adventures. I think, as you mentioned, jobs and the obligations of adult life have decreased their opportunities for backpacking. Will and his wife have just moved to Colorado, so it will be interesting to see if things change for them as far as camping.
