It was late March of 2017, and I was well along on my hike of the Arizona Trail, or AZT, as thru-hikers call it. I had hiked from the Mexican border through the desert...
Today there are two photos from the archive. In August of 2008, our family went backpacking in the Weminuche Wilderness along the Continental Divide in Colorado. With elevations for much of the trip above...

21 miles in one day with elevation!! Well done, my friend. “honking the dogs in.” Never heard that expression. Guys in camo! Glad they were friendly and you didn’t talk politics. I hope over the day you found a way to create “world peace” with all the time you had. Maybe just the USA? Or just Oregon? Or just Eugene?
Thanks, I wasn’t actually planning on 21 miles, but that turned out to be the logical place to stop, so that’s what I did. Fortunately, I’ve been training a lot in the last month, so it wasn’t too bad.
I’d never heard of “honking in the dogs” or seen anything like these guys’ dogs. It was kind of interesting. It is not uncommon for me to meet hunters and outdoorsmen in camo. Most are pretty nice. Occasionally they are carrying large weapons, but these two did not have any guns that I saw. They seemed to be out there only to train the dogs.
And, unfortunately, even though I was out there all day, I did not happen upon the magic formula for world or any other kind of peace. Failed again.☹️ Oh well, tomorrow’s another day…
