Mark’s Photos- #31
The Wind River Range of Wyoming is a spectacular place. It is full of rugged mountains, precipitous cirques, and landscapes teeming with lakes and rivers. It was July of 2019, and I had just left Atlantic City, Wyoming (a real place) a few days before. I was making my way north on the CDT along the western edge of the range. I had spent the night perched in my hammock above Raid Lake, a portion of which is evident in today’s photo. I was packed and hiking before sunup, but stopped for a trail breakfast after about a mile. I was sitting on a boulder, of which there were plenty, enjoying a steaming cup of Joe as the pictured scene unfolded in front of me. The sun rose behind these two 12,500+ foot peaks. The clouds reflected deep maroons, evolving to reds and pinks, then oranges, followed by the yellows as the Earth shifted on its axis. Combined with the magnificent terrain, it was quite a show.

It gives me the feel of volcanic activity. Do you have a large map of the USA in your den with all the backpacking you’ve done? If not, I think it’s time!
No large map in the den. I guess I never really thought about it. I’m more about the experience itself and less about the bucket list as I get older.
