Another New Year!

FIRST I WOULD LIKE APOLOGIZE FOR THE EARLIER EMAIL SENT TO SUBSCRIBERS ANNOUNCING NEW BLOGS AND THEN INCLUDING 3 COPIES OF THE OLD ARKANSAS BLOG. I’M CHANGING HOSTS AND I THINK THAT EMAIL WAS ACCIDENTALLY TRIGGERED. ALSO, MY EMAIL FOR THE SITE HAS CHANGED TO MARKH@SLOWBROTHER.COM. ANYWAY, BELOW IS THE FIRST BLOG OF 2026.

Well I am tardy with this first blog of 2026, but, hey, I have excuses.

Sunrise in Eugene

Two weeks before Christmas, I missed the last two step going down to the basement. Not something I recommend. I landed pretty hard, as one does when they are flying through the air in an uncontrolled way. And you can take it from me that concrete doesn’t have much give. Miraculously I came away bruised, but mostly unscathed. Still, I somehow injured the area around the lateral side of my right knee. The head of the fibula. The urgent care doc didn’t find anything wrong on x-ray and neither did the orthopedic doc I saw a week later. She chalked it up as some kind of weird sprain and said to return if it wasn’t better in eight weeks. It never affected my walking, but crouching down has been a pain, literally. So we’ll see where that goes.

My knee=Normal x-ray

Also, over the holidays I came down with a long and lingering cold that I’m just now getting over. No fevers or chills, just a lot of runny nose and coughing. That made sleeping hard which didn’t help.

My final excuse is that my blog has been sort of off-line while I had it transferred over to a new hosting service. The good news is that they are mostly finished migrating the site over and it seems to be working OK. I should even have my comments back. (That’s for you Dan :^)

Frozen dew

So, I’m just starting to look at possible adventures for this year. I plan to come up with a list and report it here next week. Until then…

Dude! Don’t fall down! We have lots to do and we can’t have you limping. Yes. I know this is helpful.

Great! Now you tell me. Where were you when I was running down to the basement! 😁

Geez, I hate that business of falling on concrete. Pretty. hard stuff! I’m sorry it hurts when you crouch down and I suggest you not do that.

  3. You are one tough dude! I’m not surprised SlowBro – 1 Concrete Step – 0. I appreciate the shout out for the return of the comments section. Though we’ve had lots of Christmas/New Year rain in the weeks before we arrived in SB, it’s sunshine, buttercups, and rainbows since. Friday Hannah and I hike the East Fork of the Cold Spring Trail, the one you and I hiked. We’ll see if the raging creek allows us to cross.

    • Mark (SlowBro) Hurd says:

Thanks, Dan. I moved the blog over to WordPress.com , which I believe is where you host your blog (over60hiker.wordpress.com). Going to let the folks at WordPress worry about keeping my site running. I’ve retired from that business. At least that’s the hope.😀

And best of luck on your Cold Springs hike Friday.🤞

We have a dangerously steep basement stair case. And I am opting for a foam pad on the concrete wall at the bottom. Feel better soon.

    • Mark (SlowBro) Hurd says:

Hey Sue! Brilliant idea. Ours is not all that steep, but I think that makes it even more dangerous. Rather than being cautious, like on your dangerously steep stairway, I was lulled into a false sense of security, and of course was in a hurry and took the steps too fast. You live and learn. Or, at any rate, you live.😀
