Day Five (Zero)
0 mi & 0 ft. Well, the wind blew all night and the temperature this morning was in the 30s. It was nice to wake up inside and in a real bed. A hot shower and a cup of coffee later I was ready to sort through my plans and figure out my next move.
Fortunately, in my original plan, I had dialed back the daily mileages for the rest of the trip. Instead of trying to do 18 and 20 mile days like I have, the future holds 12 to 17 mile days, which I think is more doable. I should be well rested by tomorrow when I hit the trail again. Fingers crossed.

I have also spent the morning confirming my shuttle arrangements for the end of the trail and calling the Post Office in the next town, Pelsor, where I have a resupply box. They are holding it, but I arrive on a Sunday when they are closed. However, the postmistress is willing to take it next door to the little store and I can pick it up there on Sunday. She did remind me that the solar eclipse is on Monday and there are a lot more people in the area than usual. So I hope my box doesn’t get lost in the chaos.

I also walked the mile into town and picked up my resupply box at the Ozone PO. This will keep me going until I get to Pelsor in three days. I was hoping to get a burger for lunch, but at 11AM, the Burger Barn was not open.
So far the rest of the day has been sorting, cleaning, and airing gear to get ready for tomorrow. All the while the wind continues to blow, although not as fierce as yesterday. The winds yesterday were 20 to 40 miles an hour for most of the day! Even the locals are shaking their heads.

This afternoon I walked back into town and got three hot dogs from Burger Barn. I went back to my place and had a feeding frenzy. A quality dog with mozzarella on a toasted bun with hand made mayonnaise for $4. Delicious!
Tomorrow I leave Ozone and press on with the OHT.
Until tomorrow, Happy Trails!

Im glad your diet is as questionable as the rest of us Americanos! If it aint fried or died orange it aint good for ya….
Yeah, and I’m not even that fond of hot dogs, but these were especially good. Plus, I am in the south, fried food capital of the USA. Come to think of it, the dogs were grilled, not fried.
Well I’m even more envious about the trail since hot dogs are my favorite food group and that butterfly is lovely. And being from New Mexico we LOVE wind..that’s what we do all spring. Carry on!
Cappuccino! So great to hear from you. If you like hot dogs then you would love these. And the wind, well at least it was pushing me instead of having to walk in to it. Miss your presence on the trail. Take care.
