Gila R- Middle Fork Day 0

3:15AM- Nancy is already up and we are getting ready to head out to the airport. I have a 6AM flight on my way to Albuquerque. Nancy volunteered to take me out and drop me off. This trip is not without its issues. The Republicans let the government shut down 8 days ago and so far refuse to negotiate with the Democrats. Air Traffic Controllers are working without pay, so there have been slowdowns and cancellations here and there. I think I’ll get out to New Mexico, but maybe not on the way back in a couple weeks. We will see.

On board in Eugene

6AM- On board my first flight. I transfer in Phoenix and so far the airline says my flight should be on time. Good weather forecast for the whole trip.

8:45AM- Now in Phoenix looking for a Starbucks. I have a 4+ hour layover so no rush.

10:20AM- Found coffee and a snack and now just hanging out. Passing the time by checking the weather for the Gila trips. Yes plural. I will be hiking a 60 mile stretch of the Middle Fork & West Fork with Cappuccino starting tomorrow through the 13th. (Pink route below) Then, starting the 15th, I will be hiking the Bear Canyon to Middle Fork to West Fork loop with Jolly Rancher, Level, Scatman, and JR’s cousin Robert. (Blue route below) Unfortunately, Cappuccino can’t make this second trip. But I will be doing two treks in the Gila on this trip.

2:30PM- Arrived in Albuquerque and Cappuccino on her way to pick me up. My bag even made it here.

Until tomorrow, safe travels and happy trails…
