Pecos- Reflections
It started with an email from JR. Sent to friends in April, he wondered if anyone would be interested in a backpacking trip in August. Several of us signed on and a trip was born. Finding a place and time that worked for the group was negotiated, which then, brought us to the Pecos Wilderness during the second week of this month.

As I mentioned in a previous post, we had planned on a grand 24 mile loop that would have taken us from the 9,000 foot Pecos River valley to the over 12,000 foot shoulder of Pecos Baldy mountain. But the weather and physical limitations made this an unrealistic goal. So, we came up with a plan “B” which worked out fine.
Hanging around camp, some short hikes, and avoiding potential electrocution by lightning, seemed to suite the group. It was relaxing and fun, catching up with everyone and swap lies and some old stories with these friends.

Since we were no longer on a schedule, our hike back on the third and fourth day were easygoing and pleasant. It gave us time to literally stop and smell the flowers as well as take in the magnificent scenery.

So it wasn’t the hike we’d planned, but then it hardly ever is. I think everyone would be in agreement that it was a worthwhile adventure and a satisfying trip with good friends. And in the end, you can’t really ask for more than that.
Happy Trails!
