Day4- Pecos
The waxing moon stood out in a mostly clear sky last night as the sun faded on the horizon. It was dead calm when we turned in for the night, but sometime around 1AM the wind came up. It shook the whole grove of aspen we were camped in and continued off and on the rest of the night. Fortunately, down on the ground there was only a light breeze, but the tops were really swaying. By 7AM the wind was spent and we awoke to a blue sky and calm winds.
We had our last breakfast of the trip and were packed and on the trail by 9AM. It was only about 2 miles to the truck and most of that was downhill. We almost glided down the path in the dappled morning light of the forest, emerging after about an hour and a half at the trailhead. We walked away from another one.
The drive down the mountain was uneventful and we pulled into Harry’s Roadhouse restaurant outside of Santa Fe just before noon. We devoured lunch over great conversation and banter with the waiter. Then we were on to Albuquerque.
Once back to our respective places and showered we reconvened at Cappuccino and Scott’s house for dinner. Scott whipped up a flank steak with Pilsner sauce that was outstanding and Level’s wife, Hattie, made a fresh peach cobbler that couldn’t be beat. It was a fitting feast to cap a great trip.
After dinner we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. I will be flying back home tomorrow and will do a final blog reflecting on this adventure.
Until tomorrow, Happy Trails!…
I’d love a little vanilla ice cream with that delectable peach cobbler. Of course, I wasn’t there but would have gone to the store for ice cream for us all. What a great time with friends! Perhaps, saying yes is the key to happiness, especially for those us drawing Social Security.
No worries, we had vanilla ice cream with the cobbler!
