Day Seven
17 mi, 2,400 ft. On the trail at 7:15 dropping off my high point down to Gee Creek, a medium sized robust stream running down a small valley. I seem to remember that Gee and Haw are regional terms for left and right. There is a Haw Creek which joins Gee.
The 100 mile point on the trail is along Gee Ck. And that is where I had a trail breakfast this morning. A short time later I crossed the creek on stepping stones and the trail veered away up the hill to a beautiful, but tiny falls on a side creek.
The drop is only about two feet, but as I got there a ray of sunshine was illuminating it like a spotlight. I got several photos while this was happening. Then I worked my way down to Highway 123 and the bridge over Big Piney Creek which I would have called a river.
Once over the bridge I entered the Hurricane Creek Wilderness and climbed to Wheeler Ridge. It was several miles along the ridge to the other end. There the trail splits and one way leaded to a ford of Hurricane Ck. And the other trail Bypasses the ford. I took the bypass.
Less well marked than the main trail, the bypass cuts 2.5 miles and two fords of the OHT. It rejoined the official route after about 2.7 miles. I then hiked 3 miles along Hurricane Ck. where I am camped tonight.
Tomorrow I hike about 9 miles to get to Pelsor, AR and my resupply box.
Take care, and Happy Trails!
Love how the light captures the mini-falls! You are a helluva photographer. I have April of OCT hike up in my office. What do you think about as you hike all these many miles?
Thanks Dan. The secret to my photography is lucky. Be at the right place at the right time and take lots of pictures. Some will turn out ok. As to what I think about- mostly immerse in the moment, a kind of zen thing, but other times about future writing projects, where I need to get to that day, what is the best way to cross this stream, is this a good place to camp, etc.
Wow, 17 miles for the day and 100 mile mark. Congrats! Looks beautiful.
OZ, This is a pretty trail. Lots of water this year so every creek and seep is flowing. And every would be water fall is therefore a waterfall right now. Not a ton of wildflowers yet, but the poison ivy has not leafed out either. So that’s good.
